30 Seconds To Mars Plot ‘Crazy’ Entrance For 2010 VMAs

Jared Leto likens it to ‘open-heart surgery on the dance floor.’

You would probably think — based on, well, practically everything — that Jared Leto is not the kind of guy who likes to play things close to the vest (or studded leather jacket, or whatever). And in most instances, you’d be right. But not when it comes to 30 Seconds to Mars’ arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards. Because while he’s certainly got big plans, he’s not about to reveal them just yet.

“We have an entrance plan that has never, ever been done before in the history of the VMAs,” Leto told MTV News on Tuesday. “Basically, it’s like ‘Seinfeld’ but not … it’s like open-heart surgery on the dance floor, it’s like taking your eyeballs out and putting them in the opposite sockets. It’s going to be crazy.”

That sounds, uh, interesting. And while we suspect he’s kidding, Leto and his 30 Seconds to Mars mates definitely have something in the works for the big show, which airs Sunday, September 12, live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. After all, 30 Seconds to Mars are nominated for four awards, including Best Rock Video and Video of the Year for their epic “Kings and Queens” clip.

And so, somewhat appropriately, their grand entrance will probably be inspired by that video. Though, again, Leto isn’t about to give away any secrets.

“It could, quite possibly, pay homage to the ‘Kings and Queens’ video,” he said. “We may be arriving in a way that encourages treating your planet in a better way. … We will hopefully be arriving in style, and [be doing] something different and fun and something I believe is appropriate.”

So, bikes? Maybe. Though nothing is set in stone just yet … there are still backroom deals to be made and palms to be greased. Both of which, as luck would have it, are 30STM specialties.

“We are plotting and planning the arrival of 30 Seconds to Mars, and hopefully, we will be appearing in a very special way, but we haven’t got the final approval [yet],” Leto smiled. “We only do behind-the-scenes campaigning. We’re into bribery and things like that.”

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist through September 12.

Katy Perry, Russell Brand Hookup Detailed On ‘VMAs: Revealed’

Stars’ relationship is broken down on MTV VMA special, airing Saturday at 11 a.m.

Lots of craziness went down onstage at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. Rappers like Lil Mama and Kanye West couldn’t resist bum-rushing the stage, Janet Jackson and Madonna contributed to an icon-heavy tribute to the late, great Michael Jackson, and when Lady Gaga wasn’t dashing in and out of elaborate getups, she was writhing onstage drizzled with blood.

Unbeknownst to viewers, the backstage madness rivaled the antics that made the big show. Indeed, so much ridiculousness went down that MTV had to dish in “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum,” an insider’s look at the festivities that premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. The show also turned out to be the backdrop for one of pop culture’s most high-profile pairings: Katy Perry and Russell Brand. The duo are engaged and are rumored to be hitting the altar later this year. As “Revealed” shows, hitting the VMAs last year became a fortuitous turn for both stars.

Both Brand and Perry returned to the VMAs in ’09 after making an impression on viewers — and each other — the year before. They got each other’s attention in passing as rookies in 2008 — she was a first-time performer, he was making his hosting debut — but the next year they realized they had more in common than just sharing the marquee at the VMAs.

“I really appreciate his sense of humor. It’s real dark, it’s real wrong and it’s really funny,” Perry says in the episode about her hubby-to-be. Brand, whose grand entrance at the 2009 event was heralded by Perry belting Queen’s “We Will Rock You” accompanied by Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, admits that he has a way with words when it comes to his pop-star love. “It seems like I can say whatever I want and sort of get away with it,” Brand cheekily observes.

To find out how Perry and Brand went from ripping the VMA stage to barreling down the road toward holy matrimony, catch “The VMAs: Revealed – Presented by New 5 React Gum” Saturday at 11 a.m.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12.

Linkin Park just premiered their murky, mercurial video for “The Catalyst,” and for the second consecutive week, the song is #1 on the Billboard rock songs chart, but so far, they’ve yet to perform the song live.

But on September 12, at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, that will change. Because Linkin Park have just been added to an ever-growing list of performers for the big show, and they’ll be playing “The Catalyst,” for the first time on television.

“After two years of working on our new album, we’re looking forward to sharing our first live performance of new music with our fans around the world on the MTV Awards,” Chester Bennington said in a statement about the show.

It’s an appropriately big stage for the song, the first single off the band’s much-anticipated new album, A Thousand Suns, which hits stores on September 14.

Other confirmed performers for the 2010 VMAs include Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Paramore, Drake, B.o.B, Usher and Florence and the Machine. Travie McCoy, Jason Derülo and Robyn will also join VMA house artist deadmau5 for a series of intimate performances.

Confirmed presenters for the show include Justin Timberlake, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj and Trey Songz. More performers and presenters will be announced in the coming days. Comedian Chelsea Handler will host.

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the Best New Artist video through September 12.

Drake Channels Frank Sinatra In VMA Promo

‘I like to get into characters,’ former TV star says on the set of his ’50s-themed shoot.

Drake is taking it way back for his 2010 MTV Video Music Awards promo.

Donning a dapper suit, complete with a gentlemanly pocket square, the singer and rapper is surrounded by midcentury glamour as he takes the mic for a commercial touting his VMA appearance. The Toronto lyricist makes a dramatic entrance under a brightly lit “Drake” marquee and steps onto a stage populated by a sprawling big band sporting white jackets.

“I get to channel my inner [Frank] Sinatra,” Drizzy — who is up for Moonmen for Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Male Video — said on the set. “In the acting world, you gotta have reference points. I like to get into characters.”

Sinatra isn’t the only legend that influences Drake’s gentlemanly style in the promo. The “Degrassi” actor-turned-chart-topping MC also looked to Denzel Washington’s troubled trumpeter in Spike Lee’s 1990 flick “Mo’ Better Blues.”

” ‘Mo’ Better Blues’ is like one of my favorite movies of all time. This reminds me of Denzel, who played a character [called] Bleek Gilliam,” Drake explained. “I’m trying to channel that today.”

Drake may have mined the mannerisms of a pair of jazzy icons for the promo, but the period set and crew of extras donning retro looks also helped the MC get in character.

“There’s a ’50s theme. They got it right, though. They got the set and the wardrobe,” Drake said. “I feel like I’m here.”
